§ 54-80. Permitted composting.

  • Compost piles and bins may be maintained only as follows:

    (1)

    Compost piles or bins shall be located in the rear yard as defined by chapter 122 of this code.

    (2)

    Compost piles or bins shall be located a minimum of one foot from any side or rear lot line, a minimum of 15 feet from a side street lot line, and a minimum of 15 feet from any dwelling located on adjacent property.

    (3)

    Compost piles or bins shall not exceed eight feet in length, four feet in width or four feet in height.

    (4)

    Compost piles and bins may only be used for composting any combination of yard waste, wood ashes, coffee grounds, tree and ground nut shells and similar domestic household organic matter. A commercial compost additive may be included as part of the composting process.

    (5)

    Compost piles and compost bins shall be maintained to prevent the attraction and harborage of rodents and pests, and to prevent unpleasant odors.
